The Two Essential Mindset Changes You Need To Make This Year

Dec 6

The new year is just a few weeks away and we want to check in with you: how did your 2021 goals come along this year? Feeling a little behind?

We see you over there brooding over your vision board. On January 1st those shiny new goals felt close to your heart, but in December, it feels like they’re slipping further and further away from you. Tell us if this sounds familiar:

  • You made career goals for 2021 that you’re not meeting
  • You made fitness goals for 2021, but haven’t hit the gym half as often as you wanted to
  • You made it a point to show up more in your relationship, but you’re still squabbling over petty BS
  • You’re ready to see RESULTS, but can’t pinpoint where you’re falling short

We don’t blame you for wanting that dream life right now. We’ve been programmed since we were little kids to stomp our feet when we didn’t get what we wanted. And today, the digital age we live in makes our instant gratification tendencies even worse.

But don’t stress. You are not behind. We repeat: you are not behind. Because you’re never behind if you’re truly in your own lane.

There are some pinpoint-able scaries at work trying to get in the way of your success, though. They’re called your emotions, negative thinking, and bad habits. Are you letting these rule your life? If so, you may be headed down a slippery slope, girlfriend.

Success is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to be your own ally.

It’s time to train for that marathon. Read on to learn how to change your mindset to cut through the noise to make your goals a reality.

THE DISCIPLINE MINDSET

First up: the discipline mindset. You could be the most passion-driven women in the world, but without discipline? You’re going to have a difficult time channeling that passionate energy into realizing your goals.

But what does mindset mean in the first place? Here’s a quick, working mindset definition to get us started: it’s the mode you operate in mentally every day. Different mindsets will help or hurt you accordingly. You can choose which gear to put yourself in; are you in drive, neutral, or reverse?

WHY DISCIPLINE IS ESSENTIAL

It’s 9:46 a.m. on a Tuesday, and you’re still in bed. Your to-do list for the day is scrolling through your head like a Saturday night marquee, but you stay scrolling Instagram like you don’t have a thing in the world to do today.

Fast forward to 7:30 p.m. You’re still working, and you’re exhausted from playing catch-up all day. You still haven’t eaten dinner, and you’re skipping a sunset cruise to the beach with your boyfriend because you’re not done working yet.

“Tomorrow’s going to be different,” you think determinedly.

We can all relate. We are going to let you in on a little secret, though: discipline is the secret sauce to making your dreams come true.

You’ve gotta be willing to do what no one is to live the life that no one else does. If you want to:

  • Be successful
  • Get wealthy
  • Live abundantly
  • Reach your goals
  • Truly live life on your terms

You need discipline in your life.

That means that even on the days that you just don’t feel like it, the days you don’t have the motivation to show up, the days your bed is cozier than ever, the days the weather outside is just too gorgeous, the days you feel like the least creative person on the planet—you do what you have to do anyway.

Why? Because the thought of NOT meeting all of your desires and the thought of having the freedom and choice to live life on your terms keeps your momentum going.

This takes discipline. It’s not just an abstract concept, either—it’s an everyday practice (and sometimes, battle) with your mindset to keep yourself from sabotaging your own success.

It can be done.

TIPS FOR GETTING INTO A DISCIPLINE MINDSET

Now you know why you need more discipline in your life, but how do you go about creating that change in your mindset?

Here are a few simple, actionable tips to help you get into a disciple-focused new mindset ASAP.

First, keep in mind that discipline is created through daily habits that rewire your brain for success. It’s not this abstract, unattainable concept that you’ll never be able to reach.

Discipline is simply your choices. It’s really that simple. This knowledge is the key to welcoming disciplined action into your every day.

What does that look like?

For us, it looks like journaling every morning, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if we don’t feel like we don’t have anything to say that morning. It doesn’t matter if we’d really prefer 30 extra minutes of sleep. It doesn’t matter if we lost our favorite pen and have to write with a shitty one. It’s showing up.

Meditating is also a great practice to improve your discipline. This one works on different levels, too. First of all, the act of setting time aside to devote to meditation and mindfulness is discipline in itself. Second of all, meditation itself will increase your discipline like crazy. Why? Because it asks you to quiet your mind, and if you’re like most ambitious women, that sh*t is hard.

Try apps like Headspace or Insight Timer for guided meditations to help you get started.

Visualization is also an amazing tool for helping you to get into a success mindset. Place yourself firmly into the life you want through visualization, and your actions will follow.

Regardless of what your routine looks like, the key is to create it, plan on it, and then execute it every single day. Create your morning and evening routines and make them non-negotiables for you every single day. Don’t barter with yourself for your happiness.

Alright, onto mindset shift two: the Inspired Action mindset. Let’s go!

SHIFTING INTO THE INSPIRED ACTION MINDSET

Once you’ve got the discipline to get to work, you need to eliminate one thing to actually hit the ground running: your fear.

How many times have you stalled your action because you weren’t sure what exactly came next? How many times have you held out for 100% clarity, or 100% perfection before taking action?

Now ask yourself: how many times did that get you closer to your goal?

Eliminating fear isn’t easy, and for a long time, it’ll probably be a daily battle. Inspired action is all about taking action despite being fearful, or not being clear on where you’re headed next. Clarity comes through action. We learn through experience. We learn through our failures.

Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Before you know it, you’ll look back on the road you took to get to your success, and know what you’ll see?

You’ll see yourself pushing forward, despite feeling confused and unsure. You’ll see yourself ditching perfectionism in favor of progress. You’ll see yourself stepping boldly outside of your comfort zone.

The success you want? The business you want? The life you want? It’s all waiting for you outside of your sweet, cozy comfort zone.

Here’s how to get that inspired action going in your life: every day, step 1% outside of your comfort zone. Just give me 1%, babe. As you get used to it, that 1% will grow and grow, eventually leading you directly toward everything you ever wanted.
